AMT aries MK 258 review

Postby b_rogers » Tue Dec 08, 2009 6:48 am

im kinda new to n.v.

i currently own a atn mono, a digimax, and a 2nd gen be meyers dark invader (awesome but heavy) im lucky to have ran into a few deals lately and i thought possibly the 258 would be fun to play with..plus there arent too many actual descriptions online about the unit other than "atn is junk"

picked up a like NEW one on the bay for 160 bucks.

got it last night so here goes..

pros: light weight, small, good reticle, mounts low, has lots of features, good resolution (suprised) almost no fish eye, adjustable intensifier brightness, sleep mode that saves your settings and shut the scope down then one button "wakes" the scope up...CHEAP

cons: small viewing area, way lower mag than advertised, u have to really "eye f$%^" the eyepiece toget a focused image..the mounts are a joke and move, it EATS batteries unless u use the "smart" functions which are annoying, illuminator is useless unless focused into a small circle making the "looking down a thin tube" effect even worse and SUCKING THE BATTERIES (1hr use and its telling me they are low), lots of flicker even after 5 mins of operation, the manual doesnt tell you there are set screws to lock the windage/elev turrets, and that could easily be broken..

overall: its going back to the seller for a refund.

with a lot of illumination its ok, but the repeated loss of zero, up to 3 inch poi movement at 25 FEET. i left my laser on the rifle to simplify zeroing the scope. the movement of the mounts or whatever was causing it was easily verified bty blipping the laser and the shift was plain to see. i kept adjusting thinking maybe things would "settle" but 100 rds later, it wasnt happening. flicker flicker flicker was annoying too.

i didnt expect much, and this thing didnt deliver much.

hope this helps someone save a few bucks and hassle

there are some deals out there, but this one isnt worth over fifty bucks PERIOD.

edit: this thing is NEW.like the day it was made, not a scratch or smudge on it like it was in a time capsule. no marks on the wid/ela screws nuthin...theres no way this was even mounted. it is that clean.

i would have been really pissed if i paid 500 bucks for one of these when they were new..
